You are correct in saying that there is no guarantee that any dog will not succumb to genetic defects in some point in thier life....just as humans are imperfect, so is every dog we produce as breeders and animal in the wild for that matter.

By doing health clearances and testing before choosing mates for our dogs we can lower our odds that something will go wrong but our dogs genes don't really care how much we spend on tests when it comes down to it. Problems that hadn't reared their ugly head in generations can pop up unexpectedly when a breeder combines what he/she thinks are 2 completely healthy dogs.

A mated pair who are tested free from being "affected" with a problem can actually be fine and healthy...but can be the "carrier" of the bad genes. Some health issues in a few breeds have had enough research dollars put into the issue to find the genetic "marker" whicb enables the breeders to not only test to see if the dog HAS the health problem...but can also test to see if they "carry" it . Those tests are few and far bewteen still in some breeds but advances are being made constantly.

Generally when a breeder says they "guarantee against defects" what they mean is that IF the dog does come up with a genetic defect that compromises the dogs health and comfort, the breeder will either replace the puppy or refund money in some cases . Each breeder has their own contract....and buyers should ALWAYS sign a contract so everyone "remembers" the original deal made. Breeders place those guarantees to provide the puppy buyer with some recourse in the event something does go wrong....but we do our best as breeders to prevemt what is within our power as human beings to prevent.

I'm so glad this is helpful Zheng He. There are very few avenues for mentors to make a connection with newcomers to the breed. It used to be when dog shows were are place to "socialize" with one another...the connection was made at the shows.

These days it's a "show and go" environment with very few picnics or benched shows that basically "forced" all the exhibitors old and new to sit and converse after the judging was over. For a long time I have been trying to figure out what happened to our mentors. I think the answer is to give the "students" and "mentors" their own watering hole so to speak


Now the trick is to get enough conversation going here at Worldchow to make it worth keeping the forums open altogether. Please everyone....if you read this, leave a comment. Even a word or two to give me hope that someone is out there....lol!

How I can see video of your dog Derek?
I see only a file with .ram, my computer cannot lose for it as video.

Usually I look video on server YouTube and I have no problems.
Whether I should use the special program to see Derek?

I wish I had a video of Derek to show you. I will ask the co owner if she has something available or maybe Alex Cartabio could help me as he did all the filming of the National. I will need his permission to post any video of Derek.
